Gold Plated vs Gold Filled vs Solid Gold: What You Are Paying For

The words describe how much gold is on the piece and how it got there. That single variable explains almost the entire price range in the category.

    Gold plated

A layer of gold deposited electrically onto a base metal. Thickness varies enormously, flash plating can be under 0.5 microns, while a proper demi-fine plating runs several times that and is sealed on top.

Because the term covers both, 'gold plated' on a label tells you nothing on its own. Ask for the base metal and whether the finish is sealed; those two answers predict lifespan better than any number on the tag.

    Gold vermeil

Plating over sterling silver, with a minimum thickness defined by law in several markets. The silver base is the point: it is a precious metal, so even when the plating thins, nothing reactive is exposed.

Vermeil costs more than plated brass and behaves better against sensitive skin. It is also softer, so bands deform more easily.

    Gold filled

A thick layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base core, typically hundreds of times thicker than plating. It survives decades of wear and can be polished.

It is rare in India and priced close to low-karat solid gold, which is why most buyers skip it in one direction or the other.

    Solid gold

Gold all the way through, alloyed for hardness, 22K, 18K, 14K. It never wears off, holds resale value, and costs accordingly.

The honest case for solid gold is investment and heirloom. The honest case against it is that you will own two pieces instead of twelve, and you will be nervous every time you travel.

    Which one should you buy

If the piece is going to be worn most days and replaced eventually, a thick sealed plating over a nickel-free base gives you the best ratio of look to cost. That is the demi-fine bracket.

If it is going to be handed down, buy solid gold and stop reading comparisons. The two purchases are not competing with each other.

    Frequently asked

Is gold plated jewellery real gold?
The surface is real gold; the body of the piece is not. How long it looks like gold depends on the plating thickness and whether it is sealed.
Is gold vermeil better than gold plated?
Generally yes, because the base is sterling silver rather than brass. But a thick sealed plating over a nickel-free base outlasts thin vermeil.
Which is best for daily wear?
For daily wear on a real budget, thick sealed plating over a hypoallergenic base. For lifetime wear without any maintenance, solid gold.
