How to Layer Necklaces So They Do Not Tangle

Two chains at similar lengths will twist around each other within an hour of walking. Almost every layering failure traces back to that, not to taste.

Space the lengths by at least 5 cm

The reliable trio is 40 cm, 45 cm and 50 cm. Each sits in its own plane, throat, collarbone, just below, and they do not share space when you move.

If two chains are within 2 cm of each other, they will tangle regardless of the clasp, the weight or the metal.

Vary the texture, not the metal

A flat snake chain next to a rope chain slides past instead of catching. Two identical fine cables catch on each other constantly.

Keep the metal consistent, though, one gold tone across the stack is what makes it read as a designed set rather than an accident.

    Two or three, never more

Beyond three chains the individual pieces stop being legible and the stack becomes one mass at the neckline. If you want more presence, add a pendant rather than a fourth chain.

Put the pendant on the longest chain so it hangs clear of the ones above it.

    Layering over Indian necklines

Over a kurta, keep the shortest chain above the neckline and let the longer ones fall on the fabric. Chains that sit half in and half out of a neckline never look settled.

With a saree, layer only when the blouse is plain. Against embroidery, a single chain reads better than three.

    Frequently asked

What lengths should I use to layer necklaces?
40 cm, 45 cm and 50 cm. A minimum 5 cm gap between layers is what prevents them from twisting together.
How many necklaces can I layer at once?
Two or three. Beyond that the individual chains stop reading as separate pieces.
    Can I layer different metals?
Yes, if each metal appears at least twice. A single odd-metal chain in a stack looks unplanned.
