How to Store Jewellery So It Does Not Tarnish
In a coastal Indian climate, a piece kept in a humid bathroom cupboard degrades faster sitting still than an identical piece worn daily and stored dry.
Humidity is the main enemy
Oxidation needs moisture. A bathroom shelf, a windowsill during monsoon, or a closed pouch that was put away damp will tarnish plating faster than years of wear.
Keep jewellery in the driest room in the house, and never in the bathroom.
The cheap fix
Drop two silica gel sachets, the ones that come in shoe boxes and handbags, into your jewellery box. They cost nothing and remove the moisture that drives the reaction.
Replace them every few months, or dry them in the sun for an hour to reset them.
Store pieces separately
Metal against metal scratches, and a faceted stone will mark a softer finish. Individual pouches or a partitioned box solves it.
Chains should be laid flat or hung, never coiled loose in a pile, that is how fine chains knot and how links get stressed open.
Dry before you store
Wipe every piece with a dry cloth when you take it off. You are removing sweat and skin oil, both of which sit against the finish all night otherwise.
This one habit does more for a plated finish than any cleaning product on the market.
Frequently asked
- How do I stop jewellery from tarnishing in storage?
- Store it dry, in the driest room of the house, in separate pouches, with silica gel sachets in the box. Wipe each piece before putting it away.
- Should jewellery be stored in airtight bags?
- Airtight helps only if the piece is completely dry when sealed. Damp jewellery in an airtight bag tarnishes faster, not slower.
- Does anti-tarnish jewellery still need careful storage?
- It is far more forgiving, but the seal lasts longer when it is not sitting in humidity. Dry storage extends the life of any finish.
